They say from little things big things grow and that’s certainly the case with the Friends of Flagstaff Hill latest donation to help replace vegetation lost in the St Patrick’s Day fires.

The volunteer group held a fashion parade in Hawkesdale after the fires and wanted to donate the proceeds to the area, which was one of four south-west locations hit by the March 17 fires.
Basalt to Bay Landcare Network member Darrell Powell accepted the cheque for $560, which will be used for fire rehabilitation, at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village on Tuesday.
Because we raised it in that area we particularly wanted it to go to that area.

Outgoing Friends of Flagstaff Hill chairman Bryan O’Meara said the fashion parade fundraiser was held in conjunction with the Hawkesdale CWA at the Lutheran church hall.
“Because we raised it in that area we particularly wanted it to go to that area,” Mr O’Meara said. “We had to postpone it because of the fires. The Landcare network did tell us when we contacted them it could be used to replace vegetable gardens that were wiped out, as well as trees. If they can replace them that bit quicker because of the money then that’s great.”
