Experienced guard and multiple championship winner Holly Greene said the Mermaids were determined to respond from their gut-wrenching grand final series game one defeat to Casey Cavaliers.
The Mermaids overcame a 25-point deficit to creep within two points before a technical foul against coach Louise Brown stalled their momentum.
Greene said the home-court defeat stung.
The Melbourne-based nurse is expecting a strong start in game two on the Cavaliers’ home floor on Saturday night.
“We are feeling positive; we can only be positive as it’s do-or-die,” she said.
“I think the real positive was how we finished the game last weekend. Even though it was disappointing to go down, there were some decisions in the last few minutes which took the opportunity away from us.
“We have a lot more to show this weekend and will give it everything we’ve got on Saturday night. We know we can beat them down there.”
Greene has played 15 games in 2018, averaging 11 points and eight rebounds and has scored 17, 18, 22 and 11 points in the Mermaids’ four finals games to date.
But she is a tough personal critic.
“Because I am in Melbourne and I am not training with the girls, it is frustrating for me with my own personal performances sometimes,” she said.
Work commitments have eased in the final series, allowing Greene to suit up in each playoff game.
The Mermaids will play Casey at 8pm on Saturday night. Win and the series will go to a decider on Sunday, lose and it’s season over.
