Police said the Telegraph Road house in Mount Richmond was targeted in the early hours of the morning.
The property, which was vacant at the time, received damage to the front window and walls inside the lounge room.
Police said the bullet of the high powered rifle shot through two walls before exiting through the rear of the house.
The house is on a rural property in a remote location.
Police have seized two shotgun wads and pallets which will be sent to ballistics for analysis.
Portland police Detective Senior Constable Tim Chester said he believed there was more than one offender.
“This is a bit more than hunters shooting at a sign post in the middle of the night,” he said.
“It’s very lucky no one was in the lounge room at the time.”
Anyone with information should call Portland police on 5522 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
