Russells Creek has appointed Timms as its senior coach for the 2019 Warrnambool and District league season.
The former South Rovers three-time junior premiership coach and senior assistant said he was ready for the challenge ahead.
"It has been a goal of mine to take on a young senior list and Russells Creek has given me the opportunity, it's fantastic,” he said.
"It has been in the making for a couple of years now and I have been in the system over at Rovers for a couple of years.
"And my time has come now to have a go at it.”
Joint football president Michael Jongebloed said the club was impressed by Timms’ strength of junior development.
"He has got a very good junior record," he said.
"We have a lot of young kids in our side so that was one of the drawcards.
"The other draw card was his enthusiasm when we interviewed him was fantastic. We had to tame him down a little bit so to speak.
"Yes he is a new coach, he is untried as far as senior footy is concerned, but I think he will be fantastic."
Timms said the club’s main focus was on retention before it began its off-season recruiting.
“We want to look after the Creek boys that are here," he said.
"They finished their year off really strong, they have a great playing group so we will look after that and inject some recruits strategically and we'll selective recruit."
