The annual community challenge raised more than $535,000 for the region’s charitable organisations over its lifetime.
A Powercor spokeswoman said after a careful review of its community partnerships calendar, the company had decided the Tour de Depot event would not form part of its sponsorship calendar in 2018-19.
“We have committed to a new partnership with Cycling Victoria to support the Warrny – the Powercor Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic,” she said.
“The new partnership will enable us to give back to the south-west coast communities, including Warrnambool.”
The spokeswoman said the company was proud of the contribution the event had made to local charities and communities. People took to the Tour de Depot Facebook page condemning the decision.
Tim Boyd said it was “such disappointing news”.
“This event was a unique chance to get locals involved in cycling and amateurs riding in a competitive event, not to mention a great way to raise funds for the local community,” he said. “Must be bigger tax breaks elsewhere?”
The event’s cancellation comes after the revelation Powercor was responsible for a termite-riddled power pole which caused one of the devastating St Patrick’s Day fires.
