Matheson believed his side were still in the hunt at quarter-time despite trailing 5.0 to 1.2.
But after the first break the Demons ran away and post match a disappointed Matheson was proud of his side but admitted it would need to get better.
“It was fantastic to play or even make finals footy but there is no making finals when you dish up someting like that,” he said.
“We will have to get better, we were outworked. Whether that’s fitness, mindset or whether it is something else. We were totally outclassed today.”
The second-year coach praised the efforts of his skipper, Braden Hotker, but said most of his side had been beaten.
“I thought our captain was clearly our best player. He led from the front all day and had 10 free kicks to his name in the first half,” he said.
“Apart from that a couple of players 50-50 their positions but not many others did. I thought Corey McLaren tried really hard up forward and he was outmatched because of a few late withdrawals (Nathan Krepp (gastro) and Tyler O'Sullivan-Kirchner (unavailable).”
McLaren finished with two goals to his name and Hotker, who also kicked a goal, was named the Lions’ best player on the ground
Defender Trent Anderson was the South Rovers’ next best, while Kerry Tarbolton, Alex White and Michael Stacey also kicked goals.
