The region’s voters have nominated a record number of their over 60’s to receive state-wide adulation.

There were 140 nominations in the 2018 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards, 14 from the south-west, nine of which were from Warrnambool.

While nominees won’t be advised until early October, organisers of the annual event have confirmed the city is top for number of entries.

Department of Health and Human Services manager of Victorian Seniors Festival Chris Reidy said the number of nominees reflected the community’s high regard for its seniors.

“This means that outside metropolitan Melbourne, the south-west region provided the largest number of nominees.

“Warrnambool has always been a strong supporter of the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards, providing a number of nominations each year.

“In 2017, four nominations were received from the Warrnambool region, two from Southern Grampians and two from Glenelg.”

The awards are divided into six categories, five for individuals and one for organisations or businesses.

Winners will be chosen for their outstanding contribution to their local community and Victoria, promotion of multiculturalism, healthy living, veteran contributions, and inclusion.

Nominees must be an Australian citizens, residing in Victoria and aged 60 years or over.

Nominees selected to receive an award will be invited to attend an awards ceremony hosted by the Governor on October 9.
