Police have charged him with being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a bail/remand hearing on Friday.
Officers arrested the man at his home at 4am this morning and Warrnambool crime investigation unit detectives have just finished interviewing him.
It will be alleged the man got hold of two firearms from a man known to him.
The guns will be returned to their lawful owner.
When police officers arrived at his home, the offender greeted them while carrying the loaded shotgun.
