Warrnambool College hosted a United Nations Conference this week with students assigned to represent Member States of the UN through role play and debate.
Professor Ian Howie acted as the Secretary General at the conference and said the students had shown skills and confidence in their debating.
He said the students were allocated a country and after some preparation time had to prepare a three minute statement.
“To then stand out in front of your peers and for some who have never done that is a big challenge,” he said.
“They then have to negotiate with other students to get a consensus.
“They have to have negotiating and diplomacy skills.”
Professor Howie is the adjunct professor in International Studies School of Global, Urban and Social Studies at RMIT University and spent 40 years working in the field of international development, including with the UN.
