Warrnambool police Sergeant Tom Morris said a silver Ford Laser valued at about $3000 was stolen from Terang's McKinnon Street on Tuesday.
A friend of the car owner saw the vehicle early Wednesday afternoon on the Princes Highway near Deakin University and followed it to Gateway Plaza.
The friend contacted police, who attended and arrested a 56-year-old Warrnambool man.
He was charged with theft of a vehicle, trespass and driving while disqualified.
The man was remanded in custody overnight Wednesday and will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court today for a bail/remand hearing.
He is currently on a lengthy community corrections order for offending involving burglary, drugs, dishonesty and violence.
The accused has 50 pages of prior court appearances.
It's understood he stole the car and then ran out of petrol while driving back to home to Warrnambool.
