Performance on the line has jumped more than 10 per cent, with 81.8 per cent of services arriving at their destination on time in July.
But the figures still fall short of V/Line’s punctuality target of 92 per cent.
V/Line has revealed that of the 220 Warrnambool line services that operated for the month, 180 arrived on time.
V/Line chief executive James Pinder said reasons for delays included trains stopping at stations longer than scheduled, signal faults, debris on the tracks due to bad weather and some temporary speed restrictions still in place on the line.
He said temporary speed restrictions along some sections of the line had been removed, which had contributed to the improvement in punctuality.
“We completed a significant package of works along the line in June and while the works bedded down, we had temporary speed restrictions in place along some sections.
“These have now been safely removed so it’s pleasing to see that reflected in the improved on-time performance results for last month,” he said.
“Whilst this is a positive step in the right direction, we acknowledge more still needs to be done.”
For reliability, 96.5 per cent of services were delivered on the Warrnambool line last month, exceeding the target and improving on the June result of 95.1 per cent.
Across the V/Line network, on-time performance increased almost three percentage points to 85.9 per cent in July.
A total of 96.7 per cent of services were delivered across the network in July, exceeding the reliability target of 96 per cent and improving on the June result.
Warrnambool’s punctuality result comes three months after the line recorded its best performance since October 2011. That April result is one of only 11 where the operator has met its target in the past decade.
