The 500 primary school children, parents and teachers offered a standing ovation as the performers from Warrnambool College took their final bows.
Strictly Ballroom – The Musical is the high school’s 2018 annual production, consisting 38 cast members ranging from years 7 to 12.
The one -hour show is based on Baz Luhrmann’s 1984 stage play about a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart.
It features an array of colourful characters, a stage full of sequins, make-up, lights and dancing, as well as songs Love is in the Air, Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps and Time after Time.
Director Kerry Ziegeler said although they began rehearsals in March, herself and her colleague Kerry Cheeseman had first broached the idea much earlier.
“I’d say we first spoke about the idea in September,” she said. “We knew we had a strong dance cohort coming through and we both loved the story.”
Producer Kerry Cheeseman said the show had a wide appeal.
“It’s the Aussie Cinderella,” she said.
The show will run August 2 and 3, 12.30pm and 7.30pm at Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre.
