City councillor Tony Herbert and Andrew Suggett are proposing a bright idea for the state government’s Pick My Project initiative. They want to project moving videos onto the T&G clocktower on the corner of Lava and Liebig streets.
If successful, the project would see two poles with cameras placed diagonally opposite the tower with videos of Warrnambool’s whales, May Racing Carnival, sprintcars, local artwork and other events or seasons lighting up the building.
Mr Suggett said the idea, called Highlighting our Heritage, came about after he was disappointed a city mural in the Ozone car park had been destroyed to make way for a new building.
He said there were stunning murals in Warrnambool and he didn’t want to see them go, however this idea meant images could be projected every night and could change with no impact to the buildings.
“This concept won’t damage the building, it won’t be pulled down and it won’t fade,” he said.
“It’s everlasting. I want it to be 365 days of the year.”
Brant Wolff from Port Fairy’s Coastal Sound and Vision has come up with the concept designs for the moving images.
Cr Herbert said he “had been amazing, and incredibly generous with his time”.
He said the Bank of Melbourne, which owned the T&G clocktower, was happy for the videos to be projected on the building.
“This doesn’t affect the integrity of the building at all,” Cr Herbert said.
“It will brighten up that end of Liebig Street. If we get the funds and the community sees it more people will want to come and get involved too. A town in Tasmania has these special murals and people from all over the world come to see it. Why can’t that be us?”
Mr Suggett is also keen to see other buildings light up.
He has been in early talks with Wannon Water about illuminating its water tower at the top of Liebig Street, which will celebrate its 125th birthday this year.
He has also spoken with St Joseph’s Church and said the old town hall’s facade could be another good option.
Pick My Project voting opens early August with the community able to pick their favourite south-west idea.
