Two Hats ran second behind top jumper Sea King in last year’s Drechsler but Purcell has his fingers crossed the seven-year-old will go one better in this year’s jumping feature.
“My bloke is going good but he’ll have to be at the top of his game to win the Drechsler,” he said.
“It’s a very good field. Bit Of A Lad and Kothu Rotti look to be the up-and-comers at the jumping caper but I’m also a bit of wary of the Patrick Payne trained Zentangle. He’s got pretty handy New Zealand form.
“Two Hats ran well for a second placing behind Self Sense in the Lafferty Hurdle last time.
“We’ve just taken him along slowly since that effort. The horse is very fit and should make a good account on Sunday.”
The Mosstropper Steeplechase looks to be a mouth watering contest for jumps fans with champion jumpers Sea King and Wells running in the 3600-metre race.
John Monash, trained by Patrick Ryan in Warrnambool heads the weights in a restricted steeplechase after winning his maiden steeplechase at his home track on July 8.
Six jumping races are on the nine event program with three highweight flat races for jumps jockeys making up the rest of the program.
Race one is set to start at 11.35am on Sunday.
