The Kiwanis Club of Warrnambool is hosting a BYO Picnic Cabaret on August 25 to raise money for the Warrnambool Special Development School.
Headlining the function is Sounds of the Ghostriders.
This act will pay homage to former long-standing Warrnambool band The Ghostriders, who graced stages around the district from the start of the 1960s to the early 1980s.
Two former members of The Ghostriders, Leon Saunders (guitar) and Gil Everard (drums), are part of the current line-up and are joined by Hilton Boyle (guitar), Vaughan Parsons (bass) and Sonia Parsons (saxophone, vocals).
Saunders remembers the Ghostriders as one of the busiest acts on the local music scene during their peak.
“We would play five nights a week,” Saunders said.
“We played all the popular music of the time and we were able to adjust our set list to match what were the big songs of the day.
“We played at the Palias in Warrnambool and a lot of balls around the district and when they faded away a bit we went into the pubs and had a big following there.”
The August 25 show, which will be held at St Pius Hall, will be the latest incarnation of the band.
A series of Return of the Ghostriders shows were held almost a decade ago with all nine concerts selling out.
Saunders is expecting a similar level of demand.
“People certainly loved the band for the music we played but there is more to it than that,” he said.
“It is also about people getting together who mightn’t have seen each other for a long time and catching up.”
Sounds of the Ghostriders will be joined on stage by special guest, Justin Standley, the country music star who shot to fame on the X Factor television show. Tickets are on sale now for $35 and can be booked by contacting Ann (0438415166), Janice (0427392749) or Sandra (0407988292).
