Koroit residents Catriona Ross and Anne Nichols are part of the band Gig Jam, which is exploring a well-worn path.
Gig Jam is an old-school rock and roll cover band, made up of musicians who have all graced different stages over the journey.
Ross and Nichols, who take care of the vocals, are joined in Gig Jam by Terang’s Josh Burnett (drums), Mailors Flat’s Jason Delafosse (bass, keyboards) and Portland’s Gary Andrews (lead guitar).
“We all love music and have played in bands over the years,” Ross said.
“So we got together and decided to form Gig Jam and see how we go.
“It’s been great fun, we are aged from 40 to 60 so we play songs that we have grown up with.
“The use-by date for our set list is best before 2000.
“We play stuff from the 60s right up to 2000, I think the only genre we haven’t had a go at is hip hop.
“We play a lot of old favourites that everyone would know but we also play some flip side songs that might be a bit more obscure.
“At the moment, we have about 30 songs we are ready to go out and play on stage and we are working on adding to that.”
Gig Jam has been meeting weekly at venues around Koroit since its formation to hone its set list. The band is preparing to make its public debut in early August.
Like all good garage bands starting out, their first gig will be at the local pub, the Commercial Hotel in Koroit on August 11, with one simple ambition.
“We have a good time playing together and we want people who hear us to have fun as well,” Ross said.
“Our set list means we are pretty user friendly, we could play parties, weddings, pubs, festivals.”
The variety of Gig Jam’s set list is not surprising, given the diverse influences listed by the band’s members.
These include Burnett’s, Andrews’ and Delafosse’s love of heavy rock and roll, Nichols’ admiration for Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon, and Ross’ wide and varied tastes that range from ABBA to Bay City Rollers to Shania Twain.
