The draft Great South Coast Regional AFL, Cricket and Netball Strategy aims to provide the framework for the development of the three major sports in the region.
It comes as the Warrnambool City Council continues to advocate for the redevelopment of Reid Oval, in the hope of it becoming the region’s premier sporting ground, with the ability to host AFL matches and other events.
The strategy is being developed by the Warrnambool, Moyne, Corangamite, Southern Grampians and Glenelg municipalities in partnership with AFL Victoria, AFL Western District, Netball Victoria and Cricket Victoria.
Recreation and culture manager Russell Lineham said the strategy would provide a game plan for the future of facilities and programs in the region.
“More than 15,000 people participate in football, cricket and netball across the five municipalities,” Mr Lineham said.
“The strategy will identify key priorities and projects which we can collectively work towards achieving.
“Audits of all 101 facilities in the region were combined with the latest participation and demographic data to help inform the strategy.”
The draft strategy will be available for public comment in August.
The need for facilities to be renewed and fit for purpose is a key priority
Other considerations include population and participation changes, the establishment of a hierarchy for facilities, providing better facilities for females, investment in agreed priorities that support participation outcomes and new and innovative funding models.
