Hamilton police Sergeant Rex Habel said a security firm contacted the director of the nursery on South Boundary Road at 1.20am Sunday after an alarm was activated.
"There was an attempted burglary," he said.
"The door was forced open, which triggered the alarm, but nothing appears to have been taken.
"Crime scene officers will attend and process the nursery for forensic evidence," he said.
Anyone with information about the attempted break-in is requested to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
