Goal shooter Narelle Marsden shot 52 goals in her club debut on Saturday, helping the Seagulls topple Warrnambool 66-34 at Reid Oval.
Former Camperdown player Marsden returns to the Hampden league via Warrnambool and District league clubs South Rovers, Panmure and Allansford.
Stand-in Port Fairy coach Rhiannon Cuomo said Marsden gave the Seagulls another dynamic in attack.
She played alongside Emily Forrest, who sank 14 goals, against the Blues.
Coach Sarah McCorkell will rotate through goal attack when she returns from holiday too.
“Her height and her presence in the goal circle is really nice and it allowed Emily to relax more and she shot very well yesterday,” Cuomo said of Marsden’s inclusion.
“It has an impact across the court.
“In the defensive end (Warrnambool) was pretty short so Narelle’s height helped and Em was half a head taller than her opponent too which was nice.”
Cuomo said McCorkell was rapt to get Marsden in with seven rounds before finals.
“Sarah knew we needed someone else for stability (in attack) and gave her a call,” she said.
“Sarah will rotate herself (through goals) and Emily is only available certain weeks because of work in Melbourne.”
The Seagulls, who scored 34-14 in a dominant second half, also benefitted from Demelza Fellowes’ return in defence.
Cuomo said Port Fairy’s eighth win of the year was crucial on a tight ladder.
The Seagulls sit third on percentage above Camperdown.
“It was nice for the girls to have a good win together,” she said.
“Things just fell into place yesterday and it all worked well for four quarters.
“Sarah has gone through the draw for the rest of the season and marked down must-win games if we want to get to finals and we knew yesterday was one we had to tick off so that was nice.”
Amy Wormald boosted Warrnambool’s attacking end, shooting 19 goals after missing matches due to Big V basketball commitments.
The Blues have slipped two games outside the top five and their percentage – 83.62 – is well below fifth-placed Camperdown (110.64) and sixth-ranked South Warrnambool (105.90) with six home-and-away rounds remaining.
