The city’s breeding southern right whale ‘Odd Lips’, which has been in local waters for a few weeks, has given birth to a calf.
A Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) spokeswoman confirmed the cow-calf pair sighting this week. “This is the first recorded calf at Logans Beach this season, and we’re hopeful the pair will stay in the area over the coming months,” she said.
There were two confirmed southern right whale sightings at Port Fairy on Wednesday, with Portland the most popular spot for the mammals to visit. “It’s also been a wonderful week for whale watchers in Portland, with a very active southern right whale mother and calf sighted every day for five days in a row.”
Since the first sighting on May 19, there has been several confirmed sightings of blue whales, southern right whales and humpback whales along the coast.
