Thieves break into Breton Street Warrnambool house steal car for joyride

Thieves have taken a stolen car on a joyride after a break-in at a Warrnambool house on Friday.

Detective Senior Constable Wayne Ryan, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the theft occurred at a Breton Street property between 6.30pm Friday and 4.15am Saturday.

He said offenders gained access to a garage and used a remote control to open the front rolling door before stealing a Hyundai Sonota sedan.

The vehicle was recovered in Connemara Road about 6.30am Saturday.

Senior Constable Ryan said the vehicle was not damaged.

“It appears they’ve used it for a quick joy ride,” he said.

Meanwhile, a second burglary occurred at a property in Altman Avenue between 9pm Friday and 6.30am Saturday.

An unknown offender entered the rear of the property through a side gate and opened a sliding door into the house.

It is believed the offender did not enter the property but reached in and stole a radio CD player valued at $50.

Senior Constable Ryan said police were investigating whether the incidents were linked.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Warrnambool police CIU on 5560 1153.
