Dylan Zaine Bausch, 19, of Swanson Street, Terang, unsuccessfully applied for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until July 30.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Mr Bausch had a significant criminal history involving aggravated burglary with a weapon, armed robbery and other serious offences including theft of a car and boat and assaulting an emergency worker on duty.
She said it was likely that Mr Bausch would receive a custodial sentence even though he had the support of his family, accommodation and suffered anxiety and depression.
"His prior history has caught up with him," she said, explaining Mr Bausch was an unacceptable risk of continuing to offend and a danger to members of the public.
The magistrate said the charges seemed imminently resolvable and Mr Bausch may seek an earlier guilty plea hearing date.
Terang police Senior Constable Natalie Jorgensen said that at 5.15pm on June 21 a man was playing golf at the Terang Golf Club when a young child took his balls.
The golfer asked for them back.
An older brother of the child then approached the golfer and challenged him about talking to his brother before threatening to steal his car.
The youth then got on his phone and soon after a white Holden Commodore arrived with three or four males getting out.
One man was armed with a machete and another man had a golf club.
The golfer jumped in his car and drove away despite the Holden Commodore being parked to block his exit.
A golf club was thrown at his car and Mr Bausch chased the vehicle armed with the machete.
The victim was later able to identify Mr Bausch through social media website Facebook.
Two days later Mr Bausch went to the Warrnambool police station to see a prisoner but was not allowed to visit.
He soon after telephoned the sergeant on duty and said he had better watch himself and that not being able to visit had ruined his birthday.
On Monday, Camperdown, Terang and Mortlake police raided Mr Bausch’s Swanston Street home in Terang and found a 34cm machete, a 70cm high cannabis plant and $550 cash.
Evidence on a mobile phone showed that Mr Bausch was dealing cannabis and exchanging cannabis for ice.
There were also text message saying that Mr Bausch knew was wanted by police after chasing the golfer with the machete which had been captured on security cameras.
Senior Constable Jorgensen said Mr Bausch was already on bail charged with throwing a bottle into the face of a police officer and hindering an emergency worker on duty.
She opposed bail saying the victim had been left badly shaken, Mr Bausch didn't know the victim and that the machete incident happened in public.
Lawyer Ian Pugh said an appointment had been made for Mr Bausch with a clinical psychologist and he could live in the bungalow at his mother's property which had been provided by a government department.
Mr Bausch pays rent of $75 a fortnight.
Mr Pugh said his client indicated he would plead guilty to the majority of the charges although Mr Bausch claimed to have saved the cash found by police in a safe.
Tuesday, 7.30am: A 19-year-old Terang man will apply for bail in Warrnambool court on Tuesday after being arrested in a police raid.
Dylan Bausch, of Swanson Street, was remanded in custody overnight after being arrested when police executed a warrant at his home about 9am Monday.
An incident involving a machete was sparked last week after a boy was caught stealing golf balls at the Terang Golf Club.
It’s expected more details will be aired in court when a bail/remand hearing is held this morning.
Monday: A 19-YEAR-OLD man is expected to appear in Warrnambool court later this afternoon charged with 12 offences after a police raid at Terang.
Camperdown-based Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Asenjo said uniform officers from Camperdown, Mortlake and Terang combined to execute a search warrant at a Swanston Street home in Terang at 9am on Monday.
He said that an incident at the Terang Golf Club, involving a threat with a machete last week, prompted the raid.
Officers on Monday morning found a machete, a 70cm high cannabis plant and $500 cash.
"A 19-year-old Terang man was arrested, interviewed and charged with 12 offences including affray, cultivating and trafficking a drug of dependance, weapons offences and breaching bail," Acting Senior Sergeant Asenjo said.
The man was already on bail charged with assault-related matters.
It's expected that the 19-year-old will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a bail/remand hearing.
"It was a terrific example of local policing in local communities," Acting Senior Sergeant Asenjo said.
