The budget was passed at council’s June meeting in Port Fairy on Tuesday night.

Cr Ryan said Koroit had done well out of the budget, highlighting a number of projects for the town in the $14.385 million capital works program.

The Koroit projects include youth space landscaping and pathways ($78,100), Victoria Park oval restoration works and new mower ($51,000) and the construction of a footpath in Black Street ($102,000).

The push for a footpath in Black Street gathered momentum in January when Black Street residents presented a petition to council.

The petition called for a footpath to be built to link the street to Koroit’s CBD.

Black Street residents Vicky Walter and Marlene Lenehan led the push.

Ms Walter is vision-impaired and makes her way around on a wheelchair or motorised scooter, making her journeys into the centre of town a difficult task without a footpath.

Ms Walter said she was thrilled Moyne Shire had included the footpath construction in its budget.

“The safety aspect was my main worry,” Ms Walter said.

“It will be amazing to have a footpath in Black Street that links us to the rest of the town. It is good the shire has listened to the concerns of the residents.”

The budget has also allowed for new pathways to be built in Nullawarre ($140,000) and Peterborough ($285,000).

Port Fairy’s bounty in the budget included $260,000 for the renewal and landscaping of the Railway Goods Shed exterior. Cr Jordan Lockett said council would be seeking state government funding to pay for this project.

Stage six of the rockwall build on East Beach ($120,000) was also part of the capital works program while a new initiative is the South Beach Inundation Mitigation ($40,000).

Council has also set aside $180,000 for a Port Fairy Drainage Study.

The biggest single item in the budget was $625,000 for a new hall in Garvoc.

Roads maintenance and construction ($8.million) takes up a lion’s share of the capital works program.

Other projects funded across the shire include the installation of a barbecue and shelter at Purnim ($62,000), pool improvement works at Macarthur ($20,000) and the extension of netball change rooms ($220,000) at Panmure.

The operating budget of council for 2018-19 is $45.5 million.
