Damien Sansbury, 39, of Blackwood Court, Portland, unsuccessfully applied for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court.
While being led from court, Mr Sansbury became extremely upset and threatened to commit self-harm.
He had said he wanted bail to attend the funeral of his sister in South Australia on Thursday.
He said his sister had raised him after his mother died when he was 15 years old.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Mr Sansbury was an unacceptable risk of offending again and remanded him in custody until a further hearing in the Portland court next Tuesday.
She recorded custody management issues as a withdrawal from alcohol use and noted there was a risk of possible self-harm.
It’s expected that Mr Sansbury will try to apply for bail when represented by th Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service on Tuesday.
Police said that Mr Sansbury‘s partner was 17 weeks pregnant and she had two other young children.
At 10.30pm on Wednesday night Mr Sansbury argued with his partner after playing music loudly while he was drinking.
There was a physical confrontation and Mr Sansbury armed himself with th two knives.
He held one knife to his own throat and threatened self-harm in front of his partner and the two young children.
Mr Sansbury then lunged at the woman and there was a struggle while the woman tried to disarm him.
He struck the victim with the blunt end of the knife to the face a number of times, causing bruising around her left eye.
Mr Sansbury then grabbed his partner by the jumper and punched her with a clenched first to the head five times.
He was enraged and threatened to kill the unborn baby before lunging at the woman in an attempt to stab her.
She curled up in a ball on the ground to protect her unborn baby.
Mr Sansbury was arrested on Thursday and police said he showed no remorse or empathy.
He had scratches on his neck and chest and said it was the woman’s fault as she bought the alcohol he had consumed.
“What does she expect,” he said, telling police he had little recollection of the incident.
.Mr Sansbury has a prior court appearance for an incident involving another woman.
