Dedicated whale enthusiast Peter Read said the whale first arrived at Logans Beach on Tuesday before vanishing on Wednesday, and then returning again on Thursday and Friday.
It spent about three and a half hours at Logans Beach on Friday before heading off south-west.
Mr Read said the southern right had been to Logans Beach in two previous years and her behaviour indicated she was ready to give birth.
“It looks good,” he said of the chances of having a resident whale at Logans Beach this winter.
He said the whale had previously calved in other parts of the coastline before bringing the calf to Logans Beach.
Mr Read said the whales had this year come to Logans Beach about three weeks later than normal but “that is nature”.
Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) environment programs officer Mandy Watson said the whale was believed to be ‘Odd Lips’.
“She is a regular,” Ms Watson said.
Ms Watson said coming and going was normal behaviour for whale cows before calving and she was confident ‘Odd Lips’ would bring a calf to Logans Beach.
She was able to identify ‘Odd Lips’ with the use of photographs taken by ‘citizen scientists,’ volunteers who supply DELWP with photos of whales they had spotted.
