Jess Griffey is a self-confessed long-time ALDI shopper and is in the habit of taking her own bags.
“I’ll probably get caught out if I stop at Woolies or Coles for a few small things but I usually have bags in the boot so it should be fine,” Mrs Griffey said.
The single-use plastic bag ban came into effect in Victorian Woolworths supermarkets on Wednesday and will begin at IGA stores from June 30 and Coles supermarkets and Baker’s Delight stores from July 1.
ALDI has long promoted reusable bags, with its south-west following already taking their own bags or using the boxes provided.
Olivia Farley said it was a great initiative and, like a lot of things, it was a matter of people’s mindsets changing.
Jessica Advincula welcomed the change although she also predicts she’ll be caught without a bag if she goes in to get one item and comes out with more. “It’s about time,” she said of the state government move announced in October.
Briana Bennett said it was a great step forward and reusable items were “the way of the future”. “It shouldn’t be considered a burden to anyone,” she said. “It’s an encouraging shift in people’s attitudes towards better environmental awareness and that’s a very powerful thing.”
Former Tasmanian resident Dani Amundsen said her home state went plastic bag free a few years ago. “It takes a little while to get in to the habit and put them back in the car for next time but it’s so worth it,” she said. She and Siobhan Thompson want to see less plastic produce packaging in stores.
Warrnambool resident Leah Kermeen and her family has been travelling through Western Australia and the Northern Territory for the past three months where there is no plastic in supermarkets. “Like any changes it takes time to adjust,” she said. “Now it’s a habit to grab the reusable bags before going to supermarket.”
