Based on the 2004 comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story the round-robin style comic tournament is set to showcase an array of sporting talents while raising funds for the cancer council.
Fresh from his team’s first training session at Active Sportz, the Nestles Cricket Club stalwart said he was already feeling quietly confident.
“We back ourselves,” he said. “We’ve got some of the best arms in Warrnambool.”
The cricketer’s fighting words come as he sets a challenge for other sporting groups to follow his lead and sign up for the cancer fundraiser.
Organiser Aidan Nicolson said with more than a month to go until the event, it was already shaping-up to be a comedy catastrophe.
“It’ll be a Sunday of silliness with plenty of costumes and laughs,” he said.
“We’ll have a barbecue and the bar will be running hot.”
Mr Nicolson said the event had attracted positive attention from both corporate groups and sporting clubs.
“Real estate agents are already planning to take on the opposition and I’m signing up a fair amount of friendly grudge matches.
“We need Callaghans to take on Clinton Baulch and Roberts One Real Estate to take on Northeast Stockdale and Lego.
“Basically I’m trying to start and finish corporate wars all in one day.”
Mr Nicholson said the rounds would be divided into junior, mixed seniors and senior mens teams.
“I want mates to get a team together, register online and get costumes organised.
“I'm also on the hunt for donated prizes for the Spirit of Dodgeball award.”
Dodgeball Sunday will be held at Active Sportz Indoor Cricket and Netball on Mortlake Road, Sunday July 29 from 11am.
