Because it has fairies hidden within the town’s CBD!
Some children believe it could be the reason for its name.
Searching for these seaside fairies and proving their existence has become one of the activities introduced into this year’s Winter Weekends program.
Equipped with a list of clues provided by the Visitor Information Centre, fairy hunters search Sackville and Bank Streets for clues hoping to find the magical creatures.
Once the sheet is complete, small humans are encouraged to use the clues within a hand-written story for a chance at a prize.
Winter Weekends children’s events coordinator Charlotte Dumesny said the Fairy Hunt was part of the annual festival’s focus on younger generations.
“It’s the first year we’ve introduced any events aimed at children,” she said. “We’ve held family-friendly activities in the past but not just for children.
Her inspiration comes from an overseas holiday.
“It comes off the back of my last six-month stay in the UK where they had access to so many children’s theatre and literary events,” she said.
“Port Fairy feels like it should have that. We have young families and we are an arty town so it seemed like a perfect fit. In fact I was surprised we didn’t already have that.”
