The Phil Carse-led Magpies have defied all pre-season predictions they would struggle this season, flying out of the blocks to sit second on the ladder with eight wins and one loss.
Their wins have come against pre-season finals contenders in Port Fairy, South Warrnambool, Terang Mortlake and Cobden. Their only loss was against the undefeated reigning premier Koroit.
Carse said there was a good feeling building among the Magpies playing group after Saturday’s emphatic 49-point victory over neighbouring rival the Bombers at a wet and slippery Leura Oval.
“We are a really tight nit, close group and we are just really enjoying playing together,” the fourth-year coach said.
“I said to the boys that I felt sick and flat coming to the game (on Saturday) and when I arrived they energized me and got me going.”
Carse believes the energy within the group has brewed over time at Camperdown.
“A lot of us have played a lot of footy together now over the last few years and when you get to know guys really well on and off the field you have a lot of respect for each other and like to see each other succeed,” he said.
“We just really want to see each other succeed at the moment.”
Camperdown will get another chance to test itself against against Terang Mortlake on Saturday.
