“We were as good as we can be. We asked for commitment and effort and every player gave that, and we just fell short,” he said.
“We led for the majority of the day and just couldn’t stop their burst of momentum at the end.
“We were good in and around the contest but they were cleaner on the outside.
“They are good at stoppages and spread really well.”
Matheson said that there were about 120 stoppages during the game.
“The two ruckmen were probably the two best players on the ground, Tom Bowman and Scott Lenehan,” he said.
“We had Brad Bushell tag Sam Dwyer. Dwyer still had his fair share of ball but we tried to curtail his impact.”
Matheson said Nirranda was flag favourite, but Collegians, the Power and Timboon were all still in the mix.
