"I'm pretty p... off," Gainey said after Saturday night's six-point loss to Warrandyte Venom, 67-73.
Gainey said a lack of focus allowed the momentum to shift in the last quarter after the Seahawks led by a point.
The Seahawks had outscored the Venom 24-14 in the third term.
"Defensive lapses and not paying attention to the scout report really hurt us. We were no threat on offensive," he said.
"We didn't take advantage of our mismatches. They got a sniff and took their chance."
The team leader said his side had a a good third quarter, defence was solid, they got the shots they wanted and made them.
"Then we did the opposite in the fourth quarter," he said.
“We are one of the most talented teams in the league but we are not mentally focussed.
"We've let games slip the last two games. These are teams under us. We really should be putting our stamp on the league. At the moment we are not a finals team.
"We're still in the top six but it's a real logjam. If we drop another game we can go to 11th."
Gainey said he and his players need to step up to the challenge.
"We've won four or five on the road and only two of five at home," he said.
"We need to mix it up, consider a different starting line-up to get guys to play to their potential."
Gainey said the two game lull after six wins in a row came as a shock.
"I know the potential is there and we can get on a roll again, but it will take 12 of us not four," he said.
Meanwhile, the Mermaids scored a big win against against Warrandyte, 71-58.
A 21-8 first quarter run set up the end result.
Amy Wormald dominated with 30 points and 25 rebounds.
