Aaron Pennell, 34, of Owen Street, Warrnambool, unsuccessfully applied for bail in Warrnambool court after being charged with six offences.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose found he was an unacceptable risk of continuing to offend and remand him in custody until June 25.
Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes said there was a break-in at a McGregors Road home over the recent long weekend while the residents were away.
Thieves stole a Subaru WRX, valued at $30,000, and other items, including jewellery, worth $10,000. On Monday, images of two offenders were captured on security camera footage as they tried to break into another McGregors Road home.
Mr Pennell was identified as one of the men through his distinctive tattoos.
At another vacant McGregors Road property, police found discarded jewellery boxes, an Essendon Football Club membership card from the original burglary and a mobile phone.
When police were given Mr Pennell’s mobile number they rang it and the mobile phone found at the burglary scene rang.
"We're 99 per cent sure it's his phone," Detective Senior Constable Hughes said.
In addition there were unanswered text messages from the co-accused's Brandon Hobbs' girlfriend asking if he was with the phone’s owner.
There was also the image of a story published in The Standard about the original McGregors Road burglary.
The stolen Subaru was found dumped in suburban Geelong.
At 9am on Friday, police executed a search warrant at Mr Pennell's home and found stolen items, including tools, and a watch believed to be stolen from a burglary at Reicha's Drapery in Terang on June 6.
Mr Pennell is already on a community corrections order and has 17 pages of prior court appearances.
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said the victim of the McGregors Road burglary had been to the police station to identify stolen items and was extremely distressed.
Mr Pennell said he had an issue with his teeth, was on methadone and his partner was seven-and-a-half months pregnant and couldn't put on her socks.
