A kangaroo-proof perimeter fence will be installed in the next month, improving safety on the track.

Dunkeld Racing Club manager Lisa Evans kangaroos could be seen on the track most days and had to be kept on race days by committee members.

“Safety is paramount,” Ms Evans said.

The club has also been given a helping hand to install plastic running rails at the racetrack.

“The plastic running rails are designed to pop apart when a horse or jockey hits it,” she said.

“It protects both the jockey and the horse.”

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula made the funding announcement at the track on Wednesday.

He said there were about a dozen kangaroos on the track when he arrived.

“We’re improving fencing at the Dunkeld racecourse to boost safety for jockeys, horses and trainers,” Mr Pakula said.

“Country racing is a big employer and economic generator for our regional towns, which is why we’re proud to support the Dunkeld Racecourse.”

Ms Evans thanked the state government for the important contribution.

“Safety and animal welfare are always priorities for us and these projects have boosted both at our track.”
