President Ken McSween has written to clubs saying he has received independent legal advice that their request for a special general meeting is invalid.

McSween in the letter said he had met with clubs’ spokesman Justin Balmer, AFL Western District commission region general manager Kate Williamson and operations co-ordinator Jet Dowie on June 4. 

He said Balmer was told the special general meeting request did not comply with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and he was given an opportunity to submit another request.

“The meeting can be held at members request, however proposed changes are invalid and unlawful,” McSween said in the letter.

“Justin as the spokesperson did not present a new special general meeting request and resolution, resulting in the current resolution being invalid.”

Balmer declined to comment.

The letter is the latest move in the league’s leadership saga. Earlier this year most of the independent executive resigned with McSween and Sarah Quinn remaining to run the league. The lack of numbers prompted clubs to propose taking over and running the league under a delegates system. But McSween last week revealed he had found new recruits for the board. Balmer, on behalf of the clubs, said clubs would still push on with the special meeting request.
