St Vincent de Paul’s Glenelg Regional Council President Chris Pye said the colder months were difficult for people who struggled to pay for their heating or other essentials. 

He said Warrnambool Vinnies, located on Fairy Street, was looking for donations of winter blankets and clothing, including socks.

“Winter is much less forgiving than ordinary months and people just want to stay warm,” he said. 

Store manager Kevin Bond said the welfare centre distributed gift cards for people to spend “at their own leisure and with their dignity in tact.” 

“People can come in and purchase a donated blanket if they need it,” he said. 

“They can also come in if they are just feeling lonely or sad. We can usually tell if someone is distressed and we’ll ask them if they’re OK.” 

Mr Pye said donations of non-perishable food and money were also welcome.
