Senior Constable Ashlea Witham said police were called after a man aged in his 40s was ejected from the Cally Hotel in Fairy Street about 8.30pm.
She said the man left the hotel in a white Ford courier ute and made no attempt to stop after he hit a fire hydrant, causing water to gush onto the road of the Grace Avenue car park.
Wannon Water attended the scene.
Senior Constable Witham said underground copper piping was badly damaged.
Police believe the man was drunk at the time of driving.
“It’s very disappointing to see this type of behaviour over the long weekend,” Senior Constable Witham said.
“There would have been significant water loss.”
Senior Constable Witham said police were waiting for CCTV footage from several businesses.
“My appeal is for anyone who saw something or might have information to contact myself at the station, or for the person in question to hand themselves in immediately.”
Anyone with information can contact Warrnambool Police on 5560 1333.
