Warrnambool Golf Club took full advantage of a home course advantage to secure a treble of wins in the Western District Golf Association pennant final on Sunday.

Warrnambool’s division one scratch side secured a 4-3 payback victory over defending champion Port Fairy. The division two team secured a thumping 6-1 win over Peterborough, while the third grade side collected the pennant flag with a 5-2 victory over Portland.
First-year division one team captain Blair Prescott, who led the side through the season undefeated, said he was “absolutely ecstatic” with the victory.
“It was a good win today and it was a very close game, closer than we would have liked,” he said.
“But none the less Port Fairy and Warrnambool games are always very competitive and we have a good rivalry going.”
Prescott said the rivalry had spurred his team to get over the line.
“We didn’t want to lose to Port Fairy,” he said.
“They have the next biggest course and they have some good blokes in their side and it’s always so competitive between us and the result could go either way, like the flick of a coin.”
The club champion said he was pleased with the efforts of rising young golfer Caleb Perry, who defeated Shane Gurnett 6-5.
Prescott said experience in crunch matches helped his side get over the line.
“The boys have played in a lot of finals over the years and they knew what they needed to do and they were out their practicing and I had to get the order right and I did and the results showed,” he said.
Port Fairy captain Kevin Longmore said he was not disappointed by the defeat.
“Warrnambool was always going to be hard to beat at home,” he said.
“I thought the boys played really well and it came down to the match ups in the end.”
In the handicap section of the pennant final Peterborough secured a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Cobden in the division one final. In division two Parklands narrowly defeated Macarthur 3-2, while in division three East Framlingham was victorious over Parklands, winning 3 ½ to 1 ½.
Peterborough captain Charles Martin said he was excited by the win but that it was also “unexpected” after it got over the line on the last hole.
“It was a bit unexpected because they (Cobden) have some young players in their side that are big hitters and we are not to that class of hitters,” he said.
“We had to give them a lot of shots and I happened to get over the line just. So it was a good win in the end.”
Peterborough also had two other teams playing, the division two scratch and one in division two handicap, which both recorded losses.
