Bradley Godwin, 31, of Crawley Street, did not apply for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday and will be held in custody until a mention hearing on June 25.
He has been charged with 26 new offences after failing to appear in court on Monday and a warrant was issued for his arrest in relation to six other police briefs of evidence.
The new charges include a number of assaulting police charges, including assaulting an emergency worker on duty and multiple counts of assaulting police while armed with an axe and an aerosol can and lighter.
Mr Godwin questioned why police arrived at his home at 11am on Monday even though a warrant was not issued for his arrest until noon.
He said he had just completed a three-and-a-half-year jail term and had not been rehabilitated before returning to the community.
They (police) put me under this stress. They hounded me and hounded me until I popped,” he said.
In relation to up to nine police briefs of evidence he is now facing, Mr Godwin said: “A lot of them are made up charges.”
Lawyer Jack Rabl said his client had a history of compulsory psychiatric admissions and suffered hallucinations.
Tuesday, 7.30am: A 31-year-old Warrnambool man will appear in court on Tuesday after being charged with 13 offences following a seven-hour siege at a Crawley Street home.
The charges include three counts of assaulting emergency workers (police) on duty, causing damage and multiple counts of both breaching court orders and breaching his bail conditions.
Police will allege the man came at them with an axe before he retreated inside a property.
He will appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a bail/remand hearing.
The man was due to appear in the Warrnambool court on Monday charged in relation to six briefs of evidence, but failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Monday, 7pm: A siege in Warrnambool ended after seven hours when the man involved climbed out a window of the home he had barricaded himself in.
Warrnambool police Senior Sergeant Shane Keogh said the ordeal ended about 5.40pm.
“There was no-one harmed or injured and the male has been returned to the police station,” he said.
“He will be interviewed tonight and then will face a remand hearing.”
Senior Sergeant Keogh said a critical incident response team came from Melbourne to assist south-west police.
”He barricaded himself in and we attempted a negotiation,” he said.
“He then climbed out a back window and gave himself up.”
Earlier:
Critical incident response police have attempted to enter the property as the siege reaches its seventh hour.
Warrnambool Inspector Gary Coombes said the man is believed to be armed.
CFA and Ambulance are also in attendance.
Inspector Coombes said the man was approached by police about 11am. He presented a weapon before fleeing on foot into the house.
“There is no suggestion of a firearm but he did present a weapon to police,” he said.
“We are now in the process of getting him out. It’s been a long and lengthy negotiation process.”
A witness said police had asked nearby residents to stay inside their homes.
“We’ve heard a bit of banging and yelling coming from the house but I'm not sure what it is,” she said.
“I heard he was armed with a tomahawk,” she said.
Inspector Coombes said the community is not at risk.
“To the local people, there is no threat. He is the only person in the house...it is just a matter of convincing him to surrender to police.”
2:30pm
Police have closed parts of Crawley Street to foot pedestrians and are still surrounding the property.
Vehicles are unable to enter Crawley Street from Ardlie Street until further notice.
