The pets of all persuasions wagged their way along 5km of Warrnambool’s seaside promenade as part of the RSPCA Million Paws Walk.
Short, tall, fluffy, scruffy, young and old pooches pounded the pavement for the group’s biggest annual fundraiser.
The event was one of 15 held across Victoria on the weekend.
The morning event dished up all things dog-related including treats, bandannas, artwork and toys.
Veterinary groups were on hand to offer showbags, advice, raffles, and photo competitions until midday.
Warrnambool RSPCA shelter supervisor Tracey Patterson said she was pleased with the turnout.
“It was so great to see so many people come down to support the RSPCA Million Paws Walk,” she said.
“I think we’ve had about 250 come down which, with today’s weather, has been absolutely fantastic.”
Ms Patterson said the event was also a chance to catch up with old friends.
“It’s also been great to see so many babies who’ve been adopted by the RSPCA come down and see them again, and participate in the walk,” she said.
“I’d encourage anyone interested in coming down for a look or interested in volunteering, to please come down to the shelter on Braithwaite Street. It’d be great to see you there.”
Pet owner Andy Sloetjes, who attended Sunday’s event, said his latest addition was rescued from the shelter.
Three-year-old kelpie border collie cross ‘Missy’ has been in his care for two months.
“I found a photo on social media and I went to have a look,” he said. “After 10 days with us she’s realised we’re not going to hurt her and she’s become a great pet.”
In 2017 the RSPCA received over 55,000 calls regarding animal cruelty across Australia.
Its figures indicate that every hour 15 dogs seek refuge at an RSPCA shelter somewhere in Australia.
