Historical look at May, 1981

There were some big stories in the pages of The Standard from May 1981.

Opposition was received for a proposed development of a general store in Morriss Road.

The basis for the objections was that the area was already well enough serviced by similar business.

Attendance at the Warrnambool swimming pool was well up with 3000 adults and 3500 more children using the facility compared to the same period the previous year.

Leading Australian band The Angles played at the Capitol Theatre as part of their Into The Heat tour. Local band The Ghostriders were the headline act at The Lady Bay Hotel.

Russells Creek player Mick Lenehan was named captain of the Hampden Schoolboys football team. Coach of the team was Fred Lynch from Colac.

The local football scene had a very different look to it than now with the Mount Noorat, Portland-Port Fairy and Heytesbury leagues still operating.
