Clubs have unanimously voted to request a special general meeting aimed at addressing the league’s leadership crisis.

All but two members of the independent executive resigned last month. That came after they had voted to hand the reins to the sport’s governing body AFL Western District.

President Ken McSween, who was forced to stand down in April, but reinstated earlier this month, had been working to recruit more executive members.

But it has emerged this week that four club presidents signed a request for the special meeting sent to McSween. Clubs will seek to alter the league’s constitution and return the running of the league to nominated delegates from each of the 11 clubs. That system was last in place in 2006.

McSween said he had received the clubs’ request.

East Warrnambool president Justin Balmer said all clubs were worried about the current state of the board, which has just two members.

“We are concerned about the number of executives on the board at the moment,” he said.

“Most are now resigned and gone and there is only two board members left (McSween and Sara Quinn) and the clubs have had some concerns about that and we want to take back control of the league.”
