Kerrie McKane was stunned and proud when her 11-year-old son James Redmond revealed his plan for the big day.
“We went in the Mother’s Day Classic a couple of years ago and we were hoping to this year but we won’t be able to,” Ms McKane said.
When James found out, he decided he would do his bit to raise money for the event.
“He asked me if he was able to do something to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise some money,” Ms McKane said.
Through the support of family, friends and a local business, the 11-year-old has raised about $170.
He even went a step further and dyed his hair pink to raise awareness about the charity event.
“I”m very proud,” Ms McKane said.
“It’s probably one of the best Mother’s Day gifts.”
The annual event will will be held at Lake Pertobe on Sunday from 8.45am.
The family-friendly event, now in its 11th year, offers participants a 3km walk and 4km or 7km run from the beach kiosk.
