The club will receive $7629 from the Moyne Shire Council to renovate and restore the playing fields.
Director of Physical Services Trever Greenberger advised councillors the cash should not be granted, as the application had been received outside of the normal timelines for round one or two of the council’s Community Assistance Fund grants initiative.
“It was received outside of round one and two of the program,” he said.
“Officers have discussed this internally and have concerns that if it was approved other community groups may be aggrieved that they didn't bother applying as it was outside the timelines.”
The councillors voted unanimously against Mr Greenberger’s recommendation.
Cr Colin Ryan moved a motion to fund the upgrades and was seconded by Cr Daniel Meade.
“There is sufficient funds left to cover the application,” he said.
“I believe it should be approved now as the work that has to be done on the respective ovals has to be done in the autumn.”
The community fund had $14,548 leftover from round one.
Cr Ryan said the works needed to be done as soon as possible.
Cr Meade agreed, saying autumn was the ideal time for the surface renovation woks to be done.
“It’s a well-used oval,” he said.
“I think its a good investment of the fund’s money.”
Cr Jim Doukas said the oval had plenty of use by a very successful football team.
“If you go to Koroit now you don’t shake the people by their hand or wave to them, they just put up a high-five,” he said.
“That’s five (premierships) in a row. With this oval’s upgrade it might even be six-in-a-row.”
The club will undertake the restoration work collaboratively with the Koroit Cricket Club. The KFNC use the Jack Keane Oval for junior football, while the KCC uses it for junior and senior cricket matches. Senior footy is played on the Victoria Park Oval.
