Jamie West, 20, of Wollaston Road, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to a number of charges, including unlawful assault, recklessly causing injury and making threats to both damage property and causing serious injury.
He was placed on a 12-month CCO with conditions he do 75 hours of community work as well as assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, expected to include a men’s behaviour change program.
Police said on February 28 West and his partner argued about buying a new car.
The argument became heated and West ended their long-term relationship, telling the woman to get out.
He shoved her towards her car, grabbed her by the throat and bent her over the tray of a ute.
West then spat in the woman’s face, kicked her from behind and threatened to smash the woman’s car with a large rock.
By that stage the victim was scared, confused and in pain.
West told the woman he would kill her cat and burn her belongings.
The woman left but later answered her phone and came back to the address.
The couple argued again, West bumped the woman to the chest, blocked her leaving and picked her up by the throat until her feet were no longer on the ground.
West threw her on a bed, told her she needed to learn a lesson and jumped on her.
He choked the woman, blocking her nose and mouth, until the woman kicked out and was able to call for help.
West grabbed her by the throat again, slammed her against a wall and kicked her about five times to a thigh.
He also hit her to a thigh with a thong a number of times.
The woman suffered red marks on her throat and welts to her thigh.
Police arrived and later during an interview West admitted kicking her three or four times, that he grabbed her by the throat until she started coughing and only then did he question what he was doing.
He also admitted threatening to punch the woman to the face and to kill her cat.
West had no prior court appearances.
Defence counsel Jessica Tinetti said said West had a troubled unbringing, he had enormous guilt over what had happened and had attempted self-harm.
The victim was in court supporting West.
Magistrate Peter Mellas said West had been involved in a sustained and protracted incident involving repeated assaults.
He said West had basically terrorised the victim.
