Next week he is hoping to win two of the three feature jumping races at the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival.
Small, 26, who rode his 20th jumps winner at Hamilton last Friday, rides Dormello Mo in the $150,000 Brierly Steeplechase next Tuesday and Two Hats in the $150,000 Galleywood Hurdle next Wednesday.
The Warrnambool-based hoop partners both horses in jumping trials at Warrnambool on Tuesday in the lead up to next week’s three-day carnival. “I had no big ambitions when I started out as a jumps jockey seven years ago,” Small said.
“I thought if I can boot home a winner I would be satisfied but now I love the thrill and the adrenaline rush of riding winners.
“I’m lucky I’ve got two great rides in two of the main races. Both horses will just be having a look around the course when they trial on Tuesday morning but it will be different next week.
“I’ve also got a few other jumping rides over the carnival but nothing at this stage in the Grand Annual Steeplechase. I’ve got my fingers crossed I might pick up an Annual ride.”
More than 50 jumping horses including Grand Annual hopefuls Zed Em, No Song No Supper, I’ll’ava’alf and John Monash, plus Galleywood Hurdle chances Clondaw Warrior and Ivan Gronxy will be put through their paces in the trials. The first trial is scheduled to start at 11am.
