Sophie Barr played a crucial role in the Bombers’ 46-40 win over Hampden league rival South Warrnambool on Saturday.

The former North Warrnambool Eagle, who has spent time playing in Geelong in recent seasons, impressed Cobden coach Nadine McNamara with her leadership in both the centre and wing attack positions.

“Sophie gave us a lot of drive in the midcourt,” she said.

“She’s an experienced head. She started in centre and moved to wing attack to help run our structures effectively. She was setting up plays before the centre was even in the centre circle.”

Goal attack Jaymie Finch, who along with younger sister Emily, spearheads the Bombers’ new goal combination was also dominant.

She sank 25 goals and her goal shooter sibling 21.

“She presented well to the ball and shot extremely well,” McNamara said.

Cobden, which credited its strong first term for the win, could add to its scoring potency next week with Molly Hutt available. South Warrnambool’s defence was bolstered against Cobden with Gen O’Connor making an appearance in the red and white.
