Magpies coach Sharon Kenna used veteran duo Leah Sinnott (goal keeper) and Emma Wright (goal shooter) to great effect against Warrnambool on Saturday.

Kenna said the pair were instrumental in the 58-46 result at Reid Oval.

Wright teamed with young goal attack Chelsea Baker to put the Blues’ defence under pressure.

“Because we don’t have the two Finch girls (Jaymie and Emily), we have to keep trying something,” she said.

“Last week I started Amy Morssinkhof, who was wing attack (today), and Krystal Baker in and it didn’t quite work so I thought ‘let’s go with some height’.

“To come out and put a really good score on the board, it’s really positive and I am really pleased with it.

“For someone who has been playing defence for a numerous amount of years now, to go into goals and have to do that, that’s a really positive thing for Emma.

“It’s really great that she was able to get in under there and try and get herself in the right positions because it’s not easy.”

Kenna said Sinnott, who battled a calf injury in the off-season, was a handy addition.

“We were trying to look at match-ups and we saw that Amy (Wormald) had scored a lot of goals last week and we thought we needed to have some experience in there this week,” she said.

“We were never going to stop them scoring all the time but just her talk, and her smarts of where she puts her body, it’s exactly what we needed.

“If someone’s doing that sort of work down there, it gives confidence to the rest of the team.

“She’s only trained twice because she’s had a really bad calf. I said to her ‘we really need you to come on the court, I know you’re not 100 per cent fit’.”
