The callers claim they are from the Do Not Call Register and have asked people to pay a $100 ‘fee’ to remain on the register.
The people are asked to hand over their credit card details.
The federal government says the calls are a scam and the register was a free service for consumers to reduce unsolicited telemarketing calls and there is no charge to remain on the register.
People have been advised if they receive this type of phone call they should hang up. People can place their home, mobile or fax number on the Do Not Call Register by phoning 1300 792 958.
Scams can be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
