Bombers president Chris Walsh said the Hampden league club had worked with opponent South Warrnambool to put on a sporting feast at Cobden Recreation Reserve.
“It’s a great outlet, country football,” he said.
“It will be good to see poeple off the land and thinking about football and enjoying themselves for a day.”
All football and netball grades, from under 12s to seniors, will play with the first matches to start at 10.30am.
The senior football game – a rematch of the 2017 semi-final – is scheduled for 7pm.
Walsh said the town was recovering after the fires which left the community reeling last month.
The peat fire threat has dissipated.
Walsh said Cobden and South Warrnambool had considered moving the round two matches before being given the all-clear.
“We’ve been guided by the EPA,” he said.
“People weren’t really sure what was going on before the EPA advised us it was safe to go ahead.”
Walsh said it would be nice to see the township return to some sort of normalcy.
“For a month we were unsure with training and people weren’t coming into town which made it hard on local businesses and the town in general,” he said.
“The schools – Cobden Tech and the primary school – went back on Monday and they’re putting measures in place to get elderly residents back to Cobden Health.
“It’s gradually getting back to normal.
“Things are starting to function anyway.”
