The Seagulls had six inclusions from their 2017 grand final team in their season-opening win against Cobden on Saturday.
Jaise Coleman, Lachie Chapman, Johnny Bell, Lachie Glare and David West joined high-profile recruit Matt Pitt in purple and gold.
Nicholson said the contingent brought varying skillsets to the Seagulls’ dynamic.
Northern Territory-based tall Coleman and Chapman, who was at Laverton, have played at Port Fairy in the past.
“I haven’t really worked out where to play him at the moment,” Nicholson said of Coleman.
“He’s pretty light but he’s almost like a mobile wingman, so that’s where we played him in the last quarter and he got into the game really well.
“We’ve lost Adam Farley who is that sort of agricultural defender and Chappy’s just stepped into that role really well.”
Bell has crossed from South West District league club Heywood where he was a prolific scorer.
He has started in defence for Port Fairy.
“Johnny’s just played a lot of footy, is experienced and strong, so he was exceptional down back today,” Nicholson said.
“Anyone that said he might struggle at the standard at his age...he’s 34 or 35 but as you can see, he keeps himself in tip-top shape.”
